Prof. Dr. H. Yener Erken was born in Istanbul in 1976. After completing his secondary and high school education at Edirne Anatolian High School and Istanbul Atatürk Science High School, respectively, he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Trakya University in 1994 and graduated second in his class in 2000. In the same year, he completed his orthopaedics and traumatology residency, in Istanbul at Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital, and in 2005 he received the title of Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist.
Dr. Erken served in the Turkish military from 2005 to 2006 at the Hakkari Military Hospital. After completing his military service, he completed a 1-year international fellowship in child orthopaedics and spine curvatures, with extensive studies in scoliosis and kyphosis at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, in Dallas, Texas, which is considered to be one of the most important pediatric orthopaedic centers in the United States of America.
Upon returning to Turkey, Dr. Erken worked as an orthopaedics and traumatology specialist at Medical Park Health Group and Anadolu Medical Center (in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital) between 2007 and 2015, respectively. Erken received the title of Associate Professor in 2015 and continued his medical career at Kolan International Hospital in Şişli, Istanbul from August 2015 to August 2016.
Dr. Erken regularly performs minimally invasive spine surgery and endoscopic spine surgery, which have become leading spine surgical techniques as these methods do not damage healthy tissues in the spine while decreasing the risk of complications and providing a faster recovery time to the patient. To develop this skillset in his now-leading area of expertise, Dr. Erken completed his second international fellowship between 2016 and 2017, this time at Wooridul Spine Hospital in Seoul, Korea, the leading spine hospital in the world.
Upon returning to Turkey after his master’s degree, Dr. Erken became a faculty member at Okan University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology and then Head of the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Medicine. He recently opened his private practice and is currently treating patients in his clinic in Çanakkale. He also works on the implementation and dissemination of minimally invasive spine surgery and endoscopic spine surgery techniques, in addition to his other areas of interest, including pediatric orthopedics and spinal deformity surgery.
Dr. Erken has been awarded the Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Education Council Board Certificate (TOTEK) and is among the few orthopaedics and traumatology specialists in his country who successfully passed the European Orthopedics and Traumatology Board exam to hold the title of FEBOT (Fellow of the European Board of Orthopedics and Traumatology).
Prof. Dr. H. Yener Erken is married and has two children, and his hobbies include camping and fishing with his family. Dr. Erken is an active member of numerous organizations including Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Association (TOTBİD), Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Training Council (TOTEK), European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EBOT), Turkish Spine Society (TOD) and International Society for Minimal Intervention in Spinal Surgery (ISMISS). In 2023 and 2024 he was chosen by his peers to be the president of ISMISS, Turkey Chapter.
